B. Sonny Bal, MD, JD, MBA, PhD
Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, President & Principal Financial Officer
Dr. Sonny Bal has served on Amedica’s Board of Directors since February 2012, as Chairman of the Board of Directors since August 2014 and as President and Chief Executive Officer since October 2014. Dr. Bal is retired Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with 25 years of experience in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Missouri – Columbia. He served as Adjunct Professor of Material Sciences at the University of Missouri at Rolla. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the International Society of Technology in Arthroplasty. Dr. Bal has served on the editorial board of several peer-refereed orthopedic journals and has published extensively on the silicon nitride ceramics, and continues that work, with presentations at scientific forums worldwide.
Dr. Bal holds an M.D. from Cornell University, an M.B.A. from Northwestern University, a J.D. from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D in Materials Engineering from the Kyoto Institute of Technology.
Bryan J. McEntire, MBA, PhD
Chief Technology Officer
Dr. McEntire has more than 30 years of experience in advanced ceramic product development, quality engineering and manufacturing. Prior to joining AMEDICA, Dr. McEntire held various senior roles in notable ceramics and materials companies, including Applied Materials, Saint-Gobain Industrial Ceramics Corporation, and Ceramatec. He is an author or co-author of over 45 technical papers on ceramic materials, processing and characterization, and served as an invited short-course lecturer on Forming of Ceramics at the Annual Meeting of the American Ceramic Society from 1986 to 1995. He was nominated and elected to be a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 2012.
Dr. McEntire holds B.S. and M.B.A. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, and Operations Management, respectively, both from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. in Biomaterials Engineering from the Kyoto Institute of Technology.
General Manager and VP Operations
David O’Brien joined Amedica in March 2014 and currently serves as the Vice President of Operations.
Mr. O’Brien has over 25 years of industrial experience in the manufacturing of medical devices and ceramics. From 2005 to 2014, he fulfilled several engineering leadership roles for Covidien including Manufacturing Engineering Manager for the Norfolk, Nebraska facility. From 1991 to 2005, he worked for Arnold Magnetic Technologies in the production of ceramic, powder metal and molded magnets in multiple facilities across the U.S. and in England. He has extensive experience with Lean and other Continuous Improvement initiatives.
Mr. O’Brien holds an M.S. in Ceramic Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a B.S. in Physics from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
